Getting serious about college
The Youth Center is committed to the academic success of all its members. We strive to ensure that youth members meet the academic, financial and emotional challenges necessary to complete a college education and earn a degree.
Comer To College
As an extension of GCYC’s mission to provide support for its students to graduate high school, prepared for college and careers, the Comer To College initiative was launched in 2012. The initiative serves students from over 30 high schools in Chicago and more than 250 students in college across the nation. Students are provided with comprehensive academic and social support to help each student prepare for, enroll and graduate from college.
Early College Awareness
Beginning in 9th grade, students enroll in Early College Scholars coursework, visit local campuses, and engage in summer enrichment experiences, where they learn about the college experience firsthand.
Quality College Planning
Students meet with Comer through College counselors who help keep track of their college planning progress. The Comer through College team provides direct support to students navigating the pre-college experience, helping with everything from the admissions process and financial aid to scheduling courses.
College Student Support
Once students enroll in college, they remain engaged with Comer through College’s alumni support team. Alumni Coordinators help high school graduates acclimate to college life and build a network of campus resources and advisors. Every student receives regular check-ins and personal visits from Coordinators. Coordinators provide ongoing financial and academic counseling as well as emotional support. One hundred percent of Comer through College seniors have been accepted to college. Approximately 90% of students from the classes of 2012 and 2013 are persisting in college and remain on track to graduate.
