Getting serious about college
The Youth Center is committed to the academic success of its members throughout high school and as they prepare for college. A team of dedicated coaches works with every Junior and Senior to help them navigate admissions testing, as well as college and financial aid applications. The Youth Center strives to ensure that all of its members meet challenges necessary to pursue a college education.
Upward Bound (UB) is the center’s primary college-bound program. UB students meet every Saturday and throughout the week to build skills essential to college acceptance. Through ACT and Common Application for Undergraduate Admission preparation, UB students are serious about gaining acceptance to a four year college. Over the course of a year, UB students will visit over 15 different college campuses and spend over 200 hours in college-preparatory classes outside of school hours.
Comer 2 College is a college coaching program staffed by a team with over 40 years of combined experience in helping students pursue their college aspirations. GCYC Seniors are paired with a college coach to help navigate college and financial aid applications. Coaches maintain contact with students through their college years to help ensure a successful journey toward a degree.
The Excellence through College Education and Learning (EXCEL) program is based on the belief that all students can excel. Every Monday through Friday after school and on Saturday afternoons, high school students take part in one-on-one tutoring sessions and workshops covering a variety of topics to support student growth.
